Unix Trainer and Consultant

Myths Busted

I am a Unix trainer for many years and have taught literally thousands of people. I found that many people come with wrong ideas about Unix and programming in general.

Myth : I am a QA, DBA, system administrator, support person; I do not require programming.
Wrong! You have to learn fair amount of scripting and programming. This will save you lot of routine work.

Myth : I am a Java/Dot Net/C++ etc. programmer and I think scripting languages are for non-programmers or they are not suited to be first language.
Wrong! Many geeks across the world have Python/Perl/Php etc. as their main language.

Myth : Unix is so boring, that black screen and the ugly vi editor.
Wrong! The command lines gives the users the power which they can never get with gui. The vi editor can be used to code 100% faster.
